Glen Iris Residence

This residence was designed commanding a strong presence within the streetscape through its sculptural architectural form, drawing inspiration from the serenity and composition of Japanese gardens. This design reimagines functional living by challenging conventional notions of private open space.

Faced with a steeply sloping site and neighbouring properties that overlook from multiple directions, the design strategically relocates the primary outdoor area to a central courtyard. This internal sanctuary provides complete privacy while maintaining a continuous visual and spatial connection to nature from every key living zone. A sculptural bridge traverses the courtyard, enhancing the sense of journey and engagement within the home. The result is a residence that transforms complex site constraints into a defining architectural feature — a calm, introspective retreat that celebrates light, form, and the art of spatial balance.
